PROTEGO®
Flame Arresters

An industrial pipeline with a large bolted pressure vessel and gauges sits on a waterfront platform, with a cargo ship in the background.

Reliable Explosion Protection

By stopping the propagation of explosions Explosion Abrupt oxidation or decomposition reaction producing an increase in temperature, pressure, or in both simultaneously. and flashbacks, PROTEGO® Flame Arresters protect people, assets, and operations in demanding industrial environments. A Flame Arrester allows the safe passage of gases and vapors while reliably preventing flame transmission. It consists of spirally wound metal bands that create precisely defined flame‑ quenching Quenching Cooling of a fluid by mixing it with another fluid of a lower temperature. gaps. These gaps are engineered to match the ignition and transmission characteristics of explosive vapors, ensuring effective protection under real operating conditions.

Working principle of Flame Arresters

Working principle of Flame Arresters

Flame arrester elements made of wound, corrugated metal strips can be manufactured with consistently reproducible flame
quenching gaps. The gap size is adjusted according to the requirements of the explosive mixture.

This flame-quenching principle is applied in PROTEGO® end-of-line Flame Arresters and in-line Flame Arresters.

Heat dissipation to the large surface of the gap lowers the temperature below the ignition temperature Ignition temperature Lowest temperature (of a hot surface) at which ignition of a flammable gas or vapor in a mixture with air or air/inert gas occurs under specified test conditions. , thus extinguishing the flame.

The gap width and gap length determine the extinguishing effectiveness of the Flame Arrester.

A narrower and longer gap extinguishes the flame more effectively, while a wider and shorter gap reduces the pressure Pressure (gauge pressure) Pressure for which the value is equal to the algebraic difference between the absolute pressure and the atmospheric pressure. loss. Experiments can determine the optimum solution between the two conditions.

Maintenance-friendly design

The PROTEGO® devices are working to our utmost satisfaction. PROTEGO® - who, with their technical expertise, supported in reducing the overall life cycle cost of the Detonation Detonation Explosion propagating at supersonic velocity and characterized by a shock wave. Flame Arresters installed at our plant by installing flame arresters, which are easy to clean and maintenance-friendly.
